Presentation

The Research Chair on the New Issues of Economic Globalization (NEME) has joined forces with various partners to create a Legal Clinic integrated into the Faculty of Law of Laval University. This initiative was born from a convergence between the academic and professional interests of students as well as the research and expertise needs formulated by our partners.

The Legal Clinic for International Economic Law (Clinique juridique en droit international économique - CJDIE) offers free legal and strategic services to government entities, international organizations, non-profit organizations, private economic operators such as companies or law firms.

The clinic's activities are divided into 5 areas:

- INFORMATION: Dissemination of legal information with a view to in-depth research and accessibility of international economic law.

- COMPLIANCE: Assessment of the conformity of public policies or legislative projects with international and regional commitments.

- LITIGATION: Preparation of litigation strategies (plaintiff, defendant, third party, amicus curiae) in the context of commercial disputes or investor-State arbitration disputes.

- NEGOTIATIONS: Research, analysis and support in the negotiation of international trade and investment agreements.

- RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommendations formulated on the basis of prior research to partners.

The management of the CJDIE is ensured by Professor Richard Ouellet (director) and Doctor Van Anh Ly (deputy director), with the assistance of Lise Bernard-Apéré, Antoine Comont, Serena Ortigosa FernadezLeidy Natalia Serrano Burbano and Alan Bron. This high level of supervision guarantees students valuable practical experience in order to develop their professional skills while providing the various partners with results that meet their expectations and needs. Accompanied by academic supervisors, students will also be able to be supervised by lawyers responsible for their files and team up with experts (mentors) according to the specific needs of each mandate.

This Clinic aims to be a winning initiative for all parties concerned. Students perfect their research, synthesis and writing skills, and also evolve in an environment that teaches them professionalism, taking initiative and autonomy. They will certainly be able to enrich their CV, build their network and maintain privileged relationships with our partners. This experience could potentially lead to the validation of new university credits. The Clinic also benefits partners who benefit from this expertise free of charge and who have the opportunity, ultimately, to pursue a professional relationship with experienced and highly qualified lawyers.
